Anyone can browse the content on this site, and if you become a 'member' you can contribute to it as well.

GLOs for developing digital literacy skills
A series of GLOs have been developed as part of the JISC LTIG-funded project ‘Anytime Literacy Learning Environment’ (ALLE) by the University of West London and London Metropolitan University. The GLOs are in the form of a digital learner journey, which covers academic, library and digital tools skills. The learner journey can be used as it is (http://hermes.uwl.ac.uk/learnerjourney) or the files can be downloaded and adapted to local needs (see http://alle.uwl.ac.uk for details of how to do this). The journey has been used and evaluated by over 200 students at both universities, and has been revised in light of user (student and tutor) feedback.

Demonstration of GLO Maker to M25 Learning Technologist's Group
Claire Bradley gave a demonstration of the GLO Maker tool and showed how you can adapt already created GLOs at the M25 Learning Technologist's group, held at Regent's College on July 7. The theme of the meeting was 'Free tools'. The M25LTG is an informal network for Learning Technologist's in HE within the greater London area, which meets every 3-4 months. Tom Boyle recently gave two invited talks in Kuwait. Both talks included short demonstrations of GLO Maker. The talks were:

Anytime Learning Literacies Environment (ALLÉ) project GLOs
This JISC-funded project has used GLO Maker to create a series of GLOs to form Learning Journeys to help students develop digital literacy skills. A prototype of the journeys is currently being used by students at Thames Valley University and London Met. At the end of the project, after the journeys have been refined in the light of student evaluation, the journeys and the individual GLOs within them will be made available for other Institutions to use or adapt (using GLO Maker) for their own needs.

Successful European Lifelong Learning Bid

We are partners in a successful European Lifelong learning Bid called EuroPLOT, worth 500,000 Euros. A key part of this project is further developing and using GLO Maker. The project is led by Janet Finlay at Leeds Metropolitan University, with partners in four European countries. EuroPLOT will extend GLO Maker by adding 'persuasive learning patterns' and new components and activities. We will use these tools to create and then repurpose learning resources in four subject areas: language learning, environmental science, business computing and archival studies. The project will then evaluate the impact of the persuasive learning objects on learner engagement. The start date for the project has yet to be finalised, but it should be in late 2010.

GLO Maker 2 is one year old, August 2010
Since it was launched at the end of August 2009, GLO Maker 2 has been downloaded 1,560 times. And the website [www.glomaker.org] has attracted 10,099 visits from 6,448 unique users from 95 countries: the top 5 visitors are from UK, USA, Spain, Portugal and Ireland.

GLO Maker to be used to produce learning materials for JISC-funded project
Thames Valley University and London Met have been awarded funding for a 12-month JISC Learning and Teaching Innovation project entitled 'Anytime Learning Literacies Environment (ALLÉ)'. The project will be using GLO Maker to produce a series of learning objects. The aim of the project is to evaluate a scaffolded digital learning literacy environment, which will enable learners to embark on an interactive learner journey, using reusable learning objects, supporting their learning and literacy acquisition. Existing interactive materials will be brought together in a cohesive and structured framework enclosed in a wraparound shell. The final resource will be designed for repurpose and evaluation across a range of authentic contexts (e.g. workplace, community or placement).

Tom Boyle, Carl Smith and Richard Windle ran a successful workshop on Workshop “How to create your own eLearning resources using the GLO maker tool” at the University of Wolverhampton on July 14. This workshop was sponsored by fdf (Foundation Degree Forward) to support developments relating to the projects in Health and Social Care.

Tom Boyle presented a keynote talk on “Enhancing learning through good design“ at ICT 2010 held in Singapore from June 30-July 2 (http://www.unisim.edu.sg/microsites/ICT2010). The talk presented an ecological perspective on learning in the 21st century and discussed ‘design for learning’ at module, session and learning object level. A central feature of the talk was a description of generative learning objects (GLOs) and a demonstration of GLO Maker 2. The talk was very well received, with the GLO Maker 2 demonstration attracting particular interest. Mobile GLOs

Create your own mobile GLOs for Android phones!

1. Download the app

The GLO Mobile Player has now been put on the Android MarketPlace. Search for 'GLO Player Mobile' and download.

When the app is downloaded, click on the ‘GLOPlayer’ icon. This will bring up a menu. There is an ‘Introduction’ that comes with the app (see the screen shots below).

Run through the Introduction to see what you can do in creating mobile GLOs.

Note: the app uses Abobe AIR for delivery. For the list of mobile devices supported for Adobe AIR see: http://www.adobe.com/flashplatform/certified_devices/ If your phone does not support AIR you will probably not see the app when you search on the Android MarketPlace.

2. Create your own mobile learning object in GLO Maker

We have developed a simple template to enable you to develop your first mobile GLO quickly. The template can be downloaded from http://www.glomaker.org/guides/mobile_GLO_resources.zip This is simply a GLO formatted for mobile delivery, with gaps for you to add your own material.

Authoring in GLO Maker works as normal, but only a sub-set of components is supported: text, pictures, video and hyperlinks. We intend to release a full Player later in the year which will support the full range of components

3. Download your new GLO to mobile device and run

Package the new GLO and download it to you mobile phone.

In the movie the new GLO is saved directly to the mobile phone. It can also be saved to the desktop and downloaded separately to the mobile device. Access your phone by cable from the computer (plenty of guides on YouTube if needed). You will see a directory called 'GLO_Maker', and within this a sub-directory called 'GLOs'. Save your new GLO package to the GLOs folder.

You should see your new GLO added to the GLOPlayer menu. Click on to play.

These 5 GLOs were developed in a project led by Janet Tatlock within the Combined Studies Centre at The University of Manchester, with funding from the LearnHigher CETL.

Students at University are required to develop interpretive skills: to study different views; decide which they agree or disagree with, and provide reasons for their decisions. Because of the breadth of related disciplines within Combined Studies students are required to be become familiar with a range of approaches and methodologies. The GLO format promotes not only the consideration of views within a discipline but can also be used to encourage students to view objects/text/issues from multidisciplinary perspectives thereby encouraging and supporting one of the key strengths of a combined degree programme.

The laboratory preparation of Bromobutane
Developed by Fergal Corscadden, CETL Coordinator / Educational Developer, Stranmillis University College, Belfast.
I am developing LO's for Lumen Christi College, Derry. These LO's are being produced to help A-Level students grasp traditionally difficult Chemistry experiments. The first of these, is a LO focusing on the laboratory preparation of Bromobutane. In this LO, I recorded the experiment in the school laboratory with the chemistry teacher, Dr. Marie Ferris. I then edited the video and we then recorded the audio to accompany the video and included a link to supporting materials within the LO, to the CETL website. Comment on University Campus Suffolk RLOs – added by Tom Boyle on May 26

This is a rich interesting set of GLOs. It provides virtual access to professional team members, and engages the learners in very active ways. Some quick feedback on the present – I hope that you find it useful.

GLO 1: Introduction to Professional collaboration.

Small issues: slide 8: the speech for the Podiatrist is missing
There are no transcripts for the sound files of the ‘characters’ in the teams. It is fairly easy to add transcripts.

GLO 2: Professions and People

I like the engaging start. On slides 2 and 6 you have long audio interviews where the interviewer asks several questions. The learner dos not know in advance how long the interviews are going to be, or which questions are going to be asked. I think it would be helpful to give the learner more control over how they access the ‘interviews’. You could use the Access Views component with a) one respondent and b) the interview questions listed as topics. The learner can then access the questions one at a time and in the order that they prefer (also very useful for revision in that the student can go to a specific question/ answer). There are other ways of doing it, but I think breaking the interviews up to make them more accessible and less monolithic could be helpful.

GLO 3: Improving Interprofessional working

The same comments given above apply to the audio sequences on slides 5 and 7. Different changes require different amounts of work. In order of simplicity I suggest that you:

1. Tell the learner how long each interview is
2. Add a note about the topics covered

It may be possible to Edit the audio into separate question/answer segments and allow separate access to each segment (for example, by using Access Views component) as described above.

GLO4: Empowering Service Users

Short, sharp use of audio on slide 4 carries the ‘plot’ along nicely. The audio on slide 5 seems to break up a little. Getting good, consistent quality audio is often a challenge.

GLO5: Introduction to Service Improvement
This is a substantial GLO with a weighty and interesting storyline. Slide 5 mentions a lot of commercial shops – I think that you can probably get off with this as the respondents are anonymous and simply giving opinions. The use of the logos on slide 5 raises issues of unauthorised use of trade marks. You may need to replace these unless you have permission to use them

Comment latest Bradford GLOs by Tom Boyle June 3

A varied set of GLOs with the first GLO being quite different in feel to the others. GLOs 2 and 3 have very engaging use of video with the first hand ‘voice’ of students and staff coming through very effectively. It would be helpful to indicate on videos and audio presentations how long they last. Can you also make sure that all the copyright is cleared for the resources that you use? In GLO 2 on “Self Assessment” one image has a copyright notice with “all rights reserved”.

We have completed three learning objectives which we have altered since these we have taken off all the badges of the college and changed a couple of spelling mistakes. But these 3 ROL will give you an idea of where we are so far. First RLO is based on policy underpinning manual handling. The second ROL is based on risk assessment. The third one is based on the use of equipment. We are aware that there are some major changes which are needed within these ROl and they are being carried out as we speak but these will give you a general idea of what we have covered so far.

These learning objects cover various aspects of commissioning. There are some performance issues, and in the next phase of development leading up to and including the workshop on June 9th we can resolve these issues.

RLO 1 - OVERVIEW OF COMMISSIONING WITHIN SOCIAL CARE

The video is quite long and it is very slow in loading. It may be possible to break the video up into say three 1 minute sessions, and split these across different pages. This would allow the focus on each page to be more specific. This could be more interactive for a student. The sound is also difficult to hear on the video.

RLO 2 - THE COMMISSIONING CYCLE and RLO 3 - COMMISSIONING PERSONALISED SERVICES

Again there are similar issues with the video. We need to look at improving loading performance and improving sound quality.

RLO 4 - POLICY CONTEXT – this uses pictures and hyperlinks to extend the media use in the learning object. Again the video is very slow in loading as it is in RLO 5 - OUTCOMES & MEASURES OF SUCCESS FOR COMMISSIONING

RLO 6 - COMMISSIONING FOR DEMENTIA SUPPORT SERVICES

This is livelier with quizzes used to engage the student. The video on slide 12 seems to be very long. The respondent starts working through 18 objectives. Can this be broken up and made more interactive for the student? I think that the key next step improvement for all the learning objects is to make the more engaging and interactive and avoid long video sequences. I think that it would be useful to have shorter video sequences linked with invitations for the students to actively look for things in the video, use of linked quizzes etc. The shorter video sequences will also improve loading and performance times. Ageism Attitudes and Beliefs - University of Worcester

The University of Worcester have created Reusable Learning Objects (RLO) to encourage students to meet an important learning outcome for the values module. Students must evaluate and reflect on their own values, attitudes and beliefs and how these may influence and impact on their practice. This RLO will be used as an exploratory activity prior to a taught seminar. The discussion on blackboard (VLE) and the Wordle will be discussed in the seminar and used in the summative assessment.

This is a very interesting and though provoking set of GLOs. The use of You Tube videos to articulate the ‘story’ of the learning object is very engaging. I am sure that the other groups would be interested in this, and we should discuss at the workshop on June 9th. There are two issues, however we need to consider:

1. If the user is offline he/she may wonder what is happening. You may need to warm them that they need to be connected to the Internet to see the video. This message could be given when a YouTube video is first used.

2. Unless the user is careful they can finish up with multiple ‘playings’ of the same (or different) audio sound tracts at the same time.

There are some issues having to do with the specialization of the learning object for local use: For example, in the Disability GLO there are examples on slides 4 & 5. This can be very effective, but how do we signal this issue to people who want to re-use the GLO?

Example from slide 4 “we will create and discuss your wordle next week” – how do we deal with specific references to the evoking context? Perhaps GLOs get you round this issue the local tutor cab change the reference to suit them

Example from slide 5: the link to your Blackboard discussion area – again a local tutor would have to change this.

These GLOs raise lots of productive issues for the workshop.

Thanks to the University Worcester and the University of Gloucestershire groups for leading the way with these very interesting GLOs. We should use this forum to generate some feedback to those who have posted the GLOs – as more people post their GLOs the conversation should widen.

As the University of Worcester have done, it is be a good idea to have short descriptions with the GLOs so that Web based users have an intro to what the GLO is about (and therefore why they might want to use it). There are some further examples on the GLO Samples page - http://www.glomaker.org/samples.html

GLO on Ageism – I like the jump through to the site for posting ideas, e.g “Post on blackboard” on slide 3. As this is a Worcester site that it jumps to it works locally but may need to be structured differently for a general release. This is an interesting issue. Should we make explicit these issues about repurposing – i.e. the local tutor can link it to their preferred site? A similar point applies to a phrase like “Next week we will compare it to yours.” on slide 4. Without this comment the slide works very well as a general way. Perhaps you could strengthen the provocative edge to the content – e.g. add a phrase to this slide - “What does this tell you about how we view old people?”

There is a very interesting use of external resources throughout this GLO – e.g. on the last slide. It would be good if we can find ways to disseminate these neat ideas throughout the group as a whole.

University of Gloucestershire GLOs.
This is an impressive start to create four prototype GLOs so quickly. Some feedback on the GLOs:

Understanding Triggers: the topic is quite fascinating and certainly engages you as a user. It has the makings of a great GLO. Some feedback on the present prototype:
- The first video is not loading, or taking a very long time. I am not sure of the reason. If the problem persists, please contact Carl and directly. The videos on the next RLO are working fine
- The button for confirming choice in the quiz is not visible. If you resize the quiz the item this will appear correctly.

You have taken this approach of producing prototypes than can then be refined, which I think is great. Too often people want to wait until the final polished version is ready – but feedback then may be too late. It is much better to get the prototype out early and benefit from any feedback available.

In both sets of GLOs there is a ‘provocative’ element that makes you engage – that is what I like most about these GLOs.

Q: How can I get help in using GLO Maker?
A: The main website for GLO Maker has a series of animated tutorials to help you get started in using the tool, on the Planner, Designer, Saving and packaging and Opening an existing project. There is also a comprehensive downloadable User Guide, plus other resources such as quick overviews and resource materials to use in the tutorials in the User Guide to help you start creating GLOs. Go to http://www.glomaker.org and look in the 'Guides' section.

Q: We were able to save and share our GLO correctly once, but not since - what has happened?
What happens is that everything but the images seems to copy.
A: It is important to ‘Package’ the GLO when you are finished. This creates a folder that contains everything needed for the GLO to run on another computer. Do not use ‘Save’ after you have packaged. The ‘Save’ command is only meant for GLOs that are on your local machine. You can then zip the package and send it to someone else (or transfer the folder directly using a data stick).

Q: How can other people view my GLOs? Do they need to have GLO Maker on their machines?
A: No, the users do not need to have GLO Maker. The GLOs run as Flash which is available on almost all computers. They do not need anything except the normal Flash Player (Flash Player 9.1 and above).

Q: Can GLOs be sent via email?
A: Zip the files in the GLO folder and send as an attachment. See the GLO Maker website for an example of transferring GLOs as zipped files http://www.glomaker.org/samples.html You can download the sample GLOs and unzip them to run on your computer.

Q: How does one publish Glomaker output within a VLE?
A: -- Tested with WebCT Vista --
1) Zip the files in the GLO directory,
2) Upload the zip file as you would upload any other file to the VLE,
3) Unzip the file,
Then click on the Player file as usual. The GLO is then displayed.
Note: in Windows to zip all files in a folder: right click on the folder and select “Add to archive” from the pop-up menu.

Q: How to upload a GLO Maker learning object package to Blackboard (thanks to member m.readle for this)
A: You need the GLOMaker zip file that you have created.
1. In the course or organisation, click into the area where you want to add a new resource.
2. Click on Edit View in the top right hand side.
3. Click on the Add item icon.
4. Type in the Title of the item, change the colour if required.
5. Add a Description if required (it is useful to introduce the item to students).
6. Attach local file by clicking the Browse button and navigating to the zip file you want to upload.
7. Add a Name of Link to File which will be displayed as a hyperlink.
8. In the Special Action drop down box, select:
* Unpackage this file
- This gives you another page where you select the first page to be displayed:
- Select GLO_Player.html
9. Make the file Available if you want students to see it right away and select dates if you want restrict when students can see the item
10. Click on Submit then OK
11. Click Display View to preview the item as the students will see it.

Q: How do I create a Word Assembly Quiz?

Q: Can you embed a live hyperlink within a slide?
A: Yes. This feature has been added to GLO Maker v2.1. To add a new hyperlink simply select the text and type in the hyperlink in the “http:// ..” box.

Note: when testing or running a packaged GLO without hyperlinks everything operates as before. Your hyperlinks will always work from the ‘Preview’ section within GLO Maker 2, and they also work when the application is mounted on a server online. The next section only applies if you want to activate hyperlinks from a packaged GLO on your desktop computer.

For security reasons to do with Adobe Flash, if you want activate a hyperlink from a packaged GLO on your computer desktop you need to set up a special folder where you give your permission for the GLO to access the Internet. When you click on the hyperlink you will get a pop-up box – supplied by Adobe (see the screen on the right). Click on ‘Settings’. The second box will then appear within an Adobe webpage.

Here I have clicked on ‘Edit Locations’ and set a directory “VER2.1 Tester” from where I can run my GLO with hyperlinks safely. The “VER2.1 Tester” folder was simply selected by browsing to it and selecting it. Note that I have selected the “Always allow” radio button.

If you want to avoid these issues then do not add hyperlinks to your GLO. It is an extra: only use it if it is beneficial.

Q: Cannot run a GLO which has been mounted on a Web server
The symptom is that the Player page appears blank.
A: The reason is that the server is not configured to recognise that the ‘project.glo’ file is an XML file. Get your web administrator to specify the ‘mime’ type of the 'project.glo' file as an XML file. The technical detail is given below. You can cut and paste this, and send it to your Web administrator.

For Web Administrator:
Cannot run a GLO which has been mounted on a Web server.
Cause: player.glo file cannot be found through the web server despite being present on the file systemReason: MIME type is not configured for .glo extension so web server does not know how to deal with the file.
Resolution: Configure a MIME type of "text/xml" for the ".glo" file extension - in Microsoft IIS this is done either within "Site Properties> HTTP Headers > MIME Types..." or "Server Properties > MIME Types". The first will apply the change for an individual site, the latter will apply it for all sites on the server.

Q: I want to change the color of the navigation pane how do I do this?
A: Currently, the only way to customize the navigation bar (change background color, logo and buttons) is to create a new navigation bar plug-in. This requires knowledge of programming with ActionScript 3 using Adobe Flex. A Guide on how to do this is being prepared. This will be added to the Developer section of the Wiki. Q: Is it possible to change the stage colour?
For example we would want it to be a specific colour (#5a3795) to fit in with our company's branding.
A: You can change the stage background to any colour you like. Just type (or copy and paste) the colour code in the text field provided (see screen grab).

Q: How does the Step Through’ component work?

A: The ‘Step Through’ component is a specialist component that enables a user to add commentary to a Flash movie. It was envisaged for the situation where the teacher is working with a multimedia developer. This has been a common scenario in our work with the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Reusable Learning Objects (http://www.rlo-cetl.ac.uk/). The developer creates a Flash movie with a series of ‘stop’ commands inserted. The teacher can then add their own commentary to each step. This commentary can also be easily modified by another tutor, who may wish, for example, to change the language of instruction. The ‘Referencing Books’ example on the GLO maker website provides a good example of the effect produced (http://www.glomaker.org/samples.html).

If you select the component in the usual way you get the display shown in the image on the right. There are 5 tabs in this component from ‘0’ to 4. The ‘0’ tab is the text displayed when the screen is first displayed. The teacher has used the ‘Add’ button at the bottom of the panel to add 4 more tabs (labelled from 1 to 4) and added appropriate explanatory text to each tab

When the learning object is used by the learner there is a ‘Show’ button. Each time this button is clicked the Flash animation plays to the next stop point and the appropriate text is displayed. To see it work, go to the Samples screen on the GLO Maker website and look at the ‘Referencing Books’ example - http://www.glomaker.org/samples.html

You can also download this example from the Samples page on the website and play with altering the text.

In summary, this component is meant for when the teacher is working with a Flash developer. It allows the learner to step through an animation with an explanatory commentary.

Results from survey on early use of GLO Maker
The results from our questionnaire sent to GLO Maker users are now available.

71 surveys were submitted from individuals at 46 organisations in 9 countries.
45 respondents (65%) have developed between 1 and 10 GLOs. Of these 45 users, 42 have developed between 1 and 5 GLOs and 3 users have developed between 6 and 10 GLOs.
The learning objects developed cover a wide range of subjects. Frequently mentioned subjects included Study Skills, Information Literacy and Library Skills, Computing, Business, Law, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Education and Training skills (e.g. Coaching, Mentoring).
50 respondents (75%) have encouraged others to use GLO Maker.

Report on “Generative Learning Objects (GLOs) Seminar” 24 February Organised by the Centre for Excellence in Enquiry Based Learning at University of Manchester

The seminar reported a number of developments using GLO Maker to create learning objects for the Arts and Humanities. There were over 40 attendees for the five talks. There was a rich emphasis on pedagogy and learning design in all these talks. These ideas and insights led to some exciting resources developed using GLO Maker. Eleanor Okell (University of Leeds) spoke first on “GLOs, the Pedagogical Underpinning”. Eleanor reported on a range of developments in using GLO Maker in the Humanities. She described the evolution of the eMi pattern, from pedagogical desire through to a reusable GLO design pattern. She reported that the use of GLOs had led to enriched discussion in the classroom. Janet Tatlock (University of Manchester) spoke on using GLOs to encourage the development of interpretative skills to assess and reflect on the value attributed to different objects. Again there was a detailed and intense exploration of pedagogy that led to the development of GLOs that encourage the rich interpretation of both Art objects and everyday objects.

The third talk more indirectly reflected how the GLO concept had influenced the developmemt of online resources to support access and interpretation of medieval texts (Kate Cooper and Jamie Wood, University of Manchester). A number of GLOs are being developed by PhD students at the University of Manchester. One of the students, Jenna Ashton, talked about her experience in using GLO Maker 2 which she reported as being very easy and intuitive to use. This is part of a project funded by LearnHigher CETL (http://www.learnhigher.ac.uk/) which explores the ways in which different subjects with a Combined Studies degree may investigate an object or concept. At an event held two days after the seminar several PhD students demonstrated 9 out of 12 GLOs developed in this project. In the final talk Tom Boyle from London Metropolitan University reported on recent and ongoing developments with GLO Maker 2.

Stranmillis University College - CETL - MLO creations

Using GLO Maker to design Learning Objects (LO's) for A-Level Science experiments for Post Primary School in Northern Ireland - from Fergal Corscadden, CETL Coordinator / Educational Developer, Stranmillis University College, Belfast

I am developing 4 LO's for Lumen Christi College, Derry. These LO's are being produced to help A- Level students grasp traditionally difficult Chemistry experiments. The first 2 of these,are the laboratory preparation of Bromobutane & Ethyl Ethanoate. In these LO's, I recorded the experiments in the school laboratory with the chemistry teacher, Dr. Marie Ferris. The creation of 3 MLO's for Professional Development of Numeracy Teaching in Primary Education

I have produced 3 new MLO's to be used for in-house teaching examples of Numeracy in the Primary Classroom. The remit of the partnership work between Stranmillis University College and Christ the Redeemer PS, Belfast, was to supply professional development for the staff of Stranmillis University College in relation to school based work and collaborative partnership. This work has exceeded our expectations in terms of the potential for professional development. The template model involves the video recording of 3 numeracy lessons within (Foundation,KS1&2) at the school. Each lesson/video was then produced as a multimedia learning object (MLO) which included audio reflections from each of the teachers in relation to the component parts of their lessons. Additionally, a personal reflection was recorded from each teacher based on their experience of having the camera recording the lesson and on the opportunity this gave for reflective analysis of their teaching. This has a two-fold benefit for the teachers. Firstly, none of the teachers had seen themselves teaching before. This is an aspect of the current innovative work taking place at Stranmillis which is to embed and make ubiquitous the use of video reflection and multimedia development in relation to ITE training. And, Secondly, the audio reflections and explanations assist the viewer (colleagues/professionals from other institutions) to see and hear for themselves the ideas and praxctical aspects of delivering numeracy (in this example) in the classroom.

GLOs in Combined Studies at The University of Manchester - from Janet Tatlock

Up to15 Generative Learning Objects are being created for multidisciplinary online teaching at the University of Manchester. Initially, these GLOs will be used by undergraduate students in Combined Studies courses to develop evaluative and interpretative skills. Funded by Learnhigher the project hopes to employ PHD students to develop a GLO, in one or two of the listed disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, based on the eMI (Evaluating Multiple Interpretations) pattern. The GLOs will enable students to study multiple interpretations of a key idea/image or concept. Two workshops are planned at the start of project in December 2009 and then early in 2010 to showcase the GLOs"

Medical Sociology - from Dawn Leeder at the University of Cambridge

We're updating the old Medical Sociology online modules using GLO-Maker. These have been highly successful and widely used over the years (they were originally produced in the late 90s) but they are sliding into obsolescence and are badly in need of a 21st C makeover. GLO-maker seems like a useful product to achieve this and we are already starting to identify new components.The academic side of the project is being overseen by Simon Cohn, Senior Lecturer and Medical Anthropologist who runs the Social Context of Health and Illness course for first year Cambridge medical students. We plan to produce a number of podcast-type Flash videos and add some self-assessment and reflective questions.

GLO Maker and the Women’s Library - from Debbie Holley at London Metropolitan University

The Women’s library at London Metropolitan University houses the biggest and most comprehensive collection of women’s cultural history in the UK. Their collections manager, Teresa Doherty, is keen to integrate the library resources, many of which are digitised, within the curriculum.

A series of workshops, seminars and ‘hands on’ activities are currently underway, starting last month with a taster morning for staff from the Business School and their subject librarians. In the New Year a whole University wide GLO Maker/Women’s library day is planned, as well as a poster competition encouraging students to create posters that reflect their interest in some aspect of the library collection.

This Guide provides an introduction to the Planner tool in GLO Maker. It also provides a step-by-step guide on how to create new patterns.

GLO Maker 2 is developed in Adobe Flex, and it makes extensive use of XML files. This section is mainly aimed at development using Flex. If you are a Flash (but not Flex) developer you can add you Flash movies using the Flash Loader component in GLO Maker. See a good example of a reusable Flash resource at the beginning of the 'Links to free resources' section, the 'Calculator'.

The application is built to be extendable, and it can be extended in several ways. This section provides guides on how to add: new Patterns, new Stages and new Components. The richest area for development is probably adding new Components.

New Patterns: the information on a Pattern (such as the built in EASA and eMi patterns) is held in an XML file. You can create a new pattern by editing/creating a new XML file. The new pattern will be automatically detected by the system. See the guide: “Creating new Patterns”. In future releases we aim to create a facility for users to do this directly.

New Stages: you can create a new stage to augment the built-in stages. This requires skills in Flex to add the new stage. See “Adding new Stage” guide.

New Components: there is rich scope for adding new Components to GLO Maker 2. This requires skills in Flex to create the new Component. This component can then be “plugged in” to GLO Maker, See the guide “Creating new Components” to see how this is done.

The new Pattern, Stage or Component will automatically get picked up by GLO Maker, e.g. a new Component will appear automatically on the “Components Palette” in GLO Maker. See the appropriate guide for details.

Attachments will be added for each Guide mentioned when they are completed

The featured resource is an interactive calculator developed by Richard Haynes. It can be loaded into a GLO Maker 2 application to provide calculator functionality. Select or create a 'Flash Animation' component. Then load in the calculator as you would any other Flash animation. This operates as a fully interactive calculator.	The calculator is free for reuse, and is released under Creative Commons Licence 2.0
